Marriage
We said
But the fates spun differently
And the haircuts changed

Worst part
Is nights like this
When you still hold me
Like I’m your husband
Whispering
I will protect you
For as long as I live

You are not my wife
But I too will protect you
More than married
Something else
Better, deeper
I can only hope

But I forget this
One night like this
When I am again
Alone
Reminded
Of an easier time
When we were married
And things fit well

A time
When I could ignore
Reality
